Hours after 20/20âs âFootprints in the Snowâ aired, a key figure in the story died.
After disclosing he was with Grazzini-Rucki on the night her two daughters disappeared, Dale Nathan later admitted he had information stored on his computer which showed the girls stayed in the St. Cloud area for a few days after they disappeared. His home was searched by law enforcement, who found critical evidence for locating the missing Rucki sisters.
Less than 24 hours after Nathan was seen on national television, I broke the news that he had died. Nathan was 81 at the time of his death, and according to public records, he died of cancer.
Days later, Stahl published an obituary about Nathan in which he callously wrote that had it not been for Nathan, Samantha and Gianna âmay never been found and reunited with their father.â I would later learn that Stahl had never met Nathan in person.
I had met Nathan numerous timesâI had seen the evil in his eyes, heard the hatred in his voice, and witnessed him defiantly withhold information which could help locate missing children. Nathan played a critical role in helping hide Samantha and Gianna, and he later complicated the efforts by the Rucki family and law enforcement to locate them.
Praising Nathan for his efforts in âreunitingâ Samantha and Gianna with their family was like complimenting an arsonist who warms a family on a cold night by burning down their home. Nathan helped break the Rucki family; he deserved no credit for piecing it together.
One of Sandra and her supportersâ many lies about her case concerns the circumstances of Nathanâs death. In a video released in 2018, Sandra says that Nathan had fallen ill and gone to the hospital. She claimed that he was kept in the hospital against his will and mysteriously died the day after the episode aired. Sandra claims the cause of Nathanâs death was suffocation. Despite Sandraâs need to create drama, Nathanâs cause of death as listed on his death certificate was follicular lymphoma, a cancer of the blood.

In the spring of 2016, Doug and Gina Dahlen were attending court hearings and their attorneys were busy filing motions. Each of the Dahlensâ attorneys filed multiple motions to dismiss on their behalf. One motion claimed the statute defining deprivation of parental or custodial rights was too broad and violated their right to exercise religious freedom. They also filed standard lack of probable cause motions. Before finding out whether they had been successful in their motions, the Dahlens offered to testify for the prosecution against both Dede Evavold and Sandra Grazzini-Rucki. They wanted to trade their testimony for immunity.
Just a few weeks after offering their testimony to the prosecution, the Dahlens found out their motions to dismiss had been denied. They would have to move ahead in the process and prepare for trial.

In June, Sandra appeared in court for a trial management conference.
